Great info, thank you. I love hearing what was and wasn't worth it from other writers. My book came out 4 weeks ago...kind of wished I had this piece a while back :) but still some great stuff for me moving forward. Thank you!
Well, I have no real sense for how the book is selling, beyond a "#1 New Release" in the category on Amazon, so I don't know what's truly worth it, but as hard as it is (for me) the cold-calling/-emailing/-messaging to media outlets, independent bookstores, libraries is where I'm getting traction. I'm trying to pitch the book (a humor book about raising kids who play soccer) as part of a bigger story (organized sports has a crazy effect on being a parent) and the timeliness of the upcoming World Cup.
I think your point about what's worth it to you as an individual is an important one. I keep trying to think about that and ask myself what feels right to me.
Thanks for sharing. I think it's so hard to pinpoint what specifically works in terms of sales. I'm hoping all this stuff I'm doing just has a cumulative effect. I've found libraries and librarians, especially the ones in my area, to be so kind and often excited, which makes a huge difference for me in how I feel. I love your World Cup connection!
And I interviewed you for both books, before they appeared, and at the time you were very pleased. My podcast is here and near the top of the list in the sci-fi section: https://imaginize.world/

Thanks, Karen. Congrats on your book! What promotional stuff was most worth it for you?
